Selected Onomastic Writings

The studies gathered together in this volume were published on the occasion of Rudiger Schmitt's sixtieth birthday on 1 June 1999. Considering his immense productivity on various and widely diverging aspects of ludo-European languages (esp. Iranian, Armenian, and Greek), the editors of this volume finally decided to reproduce a selection of Schmitt's more general articles on lndo-European, Indo-Aryan, Iranian, Latin, and Armenian onomastics as one of his main working fields throughout four decades.

All the texts of this volume were reset, but the original pagination was also given in bold characters within the main body of the text and is repeated in the headers. The selected articles are followed by a complete bibliography of Schmitt's writings, which he kindly provided himself to the editors; without this valuable and much appreciated help, the list of publications would never have been as exhaustive as it is now.

Rudiger Schmitt furthermore took pains of rereading himself all articles republished here ( except for nr. 8). As a result of this, a few minor misprints in the original texts have been tacitly corrected, while some other supplements, corrections, and cross references were added at the end; a capital "N" in the margin draws attention to such an additional note in the Addenda and corrigenda on pp. 223-224. The editors compiled the three indexes closing the volume.
