The Yarshater Center is pleased to co-host an Iranian Studies Seminar featuring Erica Ehrenberg (Executive Director, American Institute of Iranian Studies). The event is part of the University Seminars at Columbia University and will be held in-person in New York.

Abstract

Sixty Years of the American Institute of Iranian Studies

Since its founding in 1967, the American Institute of Iranian Studies has served the community of Iranian Studies scholars and promoted the field in the US. Initially based in Tehran where its Center assisted academics abroad, the Institute subsequently developed fellowships and project subvention programs to support advanced research and expose public audiences to Persian culture. Its purview includes the interdisciplinary study of Iranian peoples and cultures within and beyond modern day Iran, and Persianate populations outside Iran. This talk will outline the founding, establishment, and evolution of the Institute, and provide a summary of the types of scholarship and projects the Institute has funded over the decades.

About the Iranian Studies Seminars at Columbia University

The purpose of these monthly gatherings is to present and promote new research in Iranian studies from pre-Islamic times to the present. The seminar provides an opportunity for scholars and researchers in the greater metropolitan area to meet regularly and exchange views and discuss the topics of their research interests.
